Fodder production Initiative- Sustainability Model Program

Under the Sustainability Model programme (SMP) project, funded by Danida through the Danish Refugee Council (DRC), ROAD implemented a fodder production initiative to enhance organizational sustainability and support drought-prone pastoralist communities in Garissa County. The project aimed to strengthen ROAD’s income-generating capacity while demonstrating effective, climate-resilient agricultural practices. Following major setbacks in 2023 caused by severe flooding that damaged the demonstration farm, ROAD—with technical support from the County Department of Agriculture—conducted soil testing, restored degraded land, and reintroduced resilient fodder crops such as Sudan grass and Bracharia. An efficient irrigation system and essential farm tools were also procured to improve farm management and future drought resilience.

By late 2024, the initiative had delivered promising results, with 340 bales of Sudan grass harvested over two production cycles. This fodder is now being sold to local livestock keepers and NGOs, offering both a revenue stream for ROAD and a lifeline for herders during dry spells. The project has also created a replicable model for sustainable fodder production in arid environments, contributing to community resilience and improved livestock management. Through this intervention, ROAD is not only advancing its internal sustainability but also delivering real impact to the communities it serves.
